Mind: the gap

You are here. Your goal (whatever it is) is over there. Between here and there is a gap. It can be small or it can be big, its size doesn’t really matter, for it is infinite. Just like the infinitely many numbers between zero and one.

Staring down the gap is hard. So you don’t. You look up. Or sideways; on the Web. Sometimes even inside you. Just not at the gap.

I wish I could tell you that you don’t have to. That I’ve discovered that “one weird trick” which you can apply and get results. Fast. Without much effort. Just $99,99. Call now and get an extra one FREE. Yeah, right.

Or, you know, that it’s OK if you don’t achieve that goal. No need to beat yourself up. Have some snack instead. Nah, this doesn’t work either.

You have to look at the gap. Pour your soul into it (don’t worry, your soul is infinite too). Maintain your focus and concentration. Not constantly, but for long, unbroken stretches of time. “Long” can be as short as 5 seconds. It means “longer than you’re comfortable”. That’s right, you have to stretch yourself. Not too much, but more than you think you can. It’s this overcoming of mental hurdles that helps you grow.

I wish I could tell you that it gets easier. It doesn’t. But since you don’t expect it to, it kinda does.
